Pune Teen Driver’s Father Had Elaborate Escape Plan; How He Was Caught
The tragic Porsche crash that occurred on Saturday night has ignited national outrage after the 17-year-old driver was granted bail within 15 hours under what many consider lenient conditions. This incident, resulting in the deaths of two 24-year-old engineers, has also exposed a dramatic escape attempt by the teen’s father, a prominent Pune realtor.
The Crash and Immediate Aftermath
On Saturday night, a 17-year-old from Pune, driving a Porsche allegedly at 200 km per hour, collided with a bike carrying Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshtha. The two IT engineers from Madhya Pradesh died instantly. The teen driver and his friends were reportedly returning from a pub when the accident occurred.
Despite the severity of the incident, the teenager was swiftly granted bail. The conditions of his bail included writing a 300-word essay on road accidents, working with the traffic police for 15 days, and undergoing counseling for his drinking habit. This decision has been widely criticized, with the victims’ families calling the incident a “murder, not an accident.”
The Father’s Escape Plan
As the investigation unfolded, an FIR was registered against the teen’s father for allowing his underage son to drive the luxury vehicle. Anticipating arrest, the realtor devised an intricate escape plan. He first left his home in Pune, instructing his driver to head towards Mumbai in one car while sending another driver towards Goa in a second vehicle.
To further evade the authorities, the realtor switched to a friend’s car en route to Mumbai and proceeded towards Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, previously known as Aurangabad. He also began using a new SIM card to avoid being tracked through his phone.
Police Pursuit and Capture
Despite these efforts, the Pune police managed to track the realtor using the GPS of his friend’s car. The crime branch team utilized CCTV footage along the route to pinpoint his location. Their investigation culminated in a late-night raid at a lodge in Sambhajinagar, where the realtor was apprehended. He is scheduled to be produced in court today.
In light of the public outcry, police have approached the juvenile justice board to seek permission to try the 17-year-old as an adult, given he is only four months shy of 18. The decision on this plea is expected soon.
Further, the police have arrested the owners of two establishments and a staff member for serving alcohol to the minor. Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar stated that they are assembling a “watertight case” with substantial technical and corroborative evidence to ensure appropriate legal consequences for those involved.
This case continues to unfold, highlighting issues of road safety, underage drinking, and the judicial handling of severe traffic violations in India.
